For 25 years, this Texas high school relay team’s national and state records remain unbeaten

Just like hearts, still the fastest over here, records are meant to be broken, which I think we’ll run there right now. Yeah, Monty looking like that. But this one has taken We did that man 25 years later. Just a bit longer. Yeah, they’ll hold him in 1998 at the Track and Field State met Demario Wesley, Michael Frankli, Monty Clopton and Milton.

Wesley set a Texas and national record for the four by one relay, one lap for men, 39.76 seconds every track season. When it comes around, it’s like doing it all over again. A record that amazingly hasn’t n broken. They’re still holding and standing this long for 25 years.

Who survived another year. It’s pretty remarkable cuz I’m looking at te kids now, man, they man a huge h school kids nowadays.

More technology seemed faster, better fed. I ran on McDonald’s and big ribs and stronger than years be. With the technology they have now and then the record would be out of sight.

Like it wouldn’t even be close. Man. Still doesn’t mean these guys don’t get nervous. They would look at competition throughout the whole year. When truck season starts, we just keep up with it every week.

In 2022, Duncanville gave them their biggest scare yet. We went down there and watched them. I want to witness it for myselfn case they did break the record.

So which they didn’t. The track this squad practiced on.

Still here. A little different though. In the late 90s it was dirt. We’re like running in quick say, a little discomfort. Look at this separation.

I mean, there’s nobody near yous that went a long way. The race itself, a master class in speed. They shoot the gun. You see everybody, the team in lane one, a tough assignment because you start behind everyone. And when I heard a gun go, I just screamed get out.

But this group had something to prove the year before. They didn’t even make it to sta. We’re going to prove to them that we are the fastest team in the state of Texas. Once I got the stick, get it out of my hand fast as I can. Once the stick was clean, I knew it was over with.

But Demario still gets a little grief to this day for pulling up just a bit.

Once the race was secured, we did. We probably could have ran faster if someboy didn’t slow down in the front. No push. So I kind of lit off of the little bit or work pays off.

Franklin now teaching everything he knows to his son Malik, who won the 400 meter state title this year. Him growing up, you know, mostly we didn’t focus on track. It was like I want to run and Malik not even in his senior year yet until he graduates. This team has something else to root for aside from their record staying untouched. Some reason 25 years later, we still hold it.

It means a lot to me, man, to still walk around as a forward legend and still get recognized for the record. For now, 3 words revolve around these men never been caught in Fort Worth. I’m Matt Howerton.
